2020-2021 Junior CDMMEA Jazz Audition Music

updated 11.30.21

REVISED CD Virtual............Jazz Audition Process:

During the 2022 auditions students will be required to play the solo and appropriate scales/rudiments.
No sight-reading, improvisation on the Blues in F or range test

There seems to be some confusion on how the jazz auditions works.
Hopefully the following information will help.

1. Students will play the written swing scale at the top of the page of the solo and
one of the major scales, as posted for their specific instrument. (see info in jazz pdf).

3. All auditions will be performed with the appropriate accompaniment  (see below).

Drummers are now required to trade 4's as posted on the CDMMEA Jr. Jazz Drum Audition Sheet (see audition sheets).

FYI......Please note; as stated in the newly revised CDMMEA Handbook, student musicians that double audition and qualify for jazz band will automatically be placed into the jazz band regardless of their other audition.

* Winds will play the solo as written. Use the "Rhythm Section" accompaniment.
* Bass & Drums will use the "Piano & Guitar" accompaniment.
* Piano & Guitar will use the "Bass & Drum" accompaniment.

Jazz Performance information:

Students will play the written scale to start their audition as well as the chromatic scale.

Winds - Play measures 1 through the first ending as written. On the repeat, students may choose to improvise, or repeat the melody as written, perhaps adding embellishments as they see fit. They would then move on to meas. 10 through 24. From 18 to 24 students could play the written melody, improvise on the changes, or play the melody with embellishment. Meas. 25 through 27 is a cadenza passage. Students may play the written passage or opt to create their own closing riff on an F7 chord into the fermata.

Trombone part has optional parts included on a few 16th note passages. Students may choose either option without it reflecting in their final score
.

Rhythm section - Play the written parts throughout. When repeating meas. 1 through 7, piano, guitar, and bass have the choice to improvise, or comp on the changes. All auditions will be performed with an accompaniment CD
