2023-2024 Junior CDMMEA Jazz Audition Music

updated 08.27.23

Basic CD............Jazz Audition Process:

Occasionally there seems to be some confusion on how the jazz auditions works.
Hopefully the following information will help.

1. Students will play the written swing scale at the top of the page of the solo and
one of the major scales, as posted for their specific instrument. (see info in jazz pdf).

3. All auditions will be performed with the appropriate accompaniment  (see below).

Drummers are now required to trade 4's as posted on the CDMMEA Jr. Jazz Drum Audition Sheet (see audition sheets).

FYI......Please note; as stated in the newly revised CDMMEA Handbook, student musicians that double audition and qualify for jazz band will automatically be placed into the jazz band regardless of their other audition.

* Winds will play the solo as written. Use the "Rhythm Section" accompaniment.
* Bass & Drums will use the "Piano & Guitar" accompaniment.
* Piano & Guitar will use the "Bass & Drum" accompaniment.

Jazz Performance information:

See the revised CDMMEA Handbook for the specific Jazz Audition process.

Students will play the written scale to start their audition.

Winds -
Play measures 1 through 8 as written. On the repeat, students play the melody as written, perhaps with some embellishment. They would then move on to meas. 9 through 16. Again, play the melody the first time and on the repeat, students play the melody as written, perhaps with some embellishment. Meas. 17 through 21 is the most exposed part of the melody, and leads to the cadenza passage for the last 3 measures. Students may play the written passage or opt to create their own closing riff on an F7 chord.

Rhythm section -
Play the written parts throughout, including repeats. However, piano
and guitar must comp the changes on the repeat section differently each time. All auditions will be performed with an accompaniment CD when in the audition room (see the handbook for specifics).
